Knowlton Park

Location: Ellsworth, Maine

Scope of Work: The city of Ellsworth had commissioned plans for a new park which were estimated to be twice the project budget. The city worked with Steve Ribble to remove approximately $250,000 from the estimate through value engineering while increasing recreational offerings.

A key point of the exercise was to retain the park’s many features desired through community forums. Steve removed nearly $200,000 by omitting granite walls and accents which were not part of the Ellsworth context. The balance was achieved by redesigning plazas, play areas and a spash pad, replacing a seasonal fountain with year-round wind sculptures, and adding a granite donor recognition area. With this, the project was brought into budget while retaining the community designed elements.
